You Are Ridiculous Mr. Juncker!

YOU ARE RIDICULOUS MR. JUNCKER!

Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker declared at a conference that the English language is losing importance in Europe: “Slowly, but surely English is losing importance in Europe.” (in “Jornal Económico” at http://www.jornaleconomico.sapo.pt/noticias/o-ingles-esta-a-perder-importancia-na-europa-diz-juncker-em-frances-154821)  It is clear the spite in which the EU’s chief bureaucrat holds the United Kingdom. However, he chose an absurd sting to get at the UK and thus he covered himself in ridicule.

The English language is on a roll for decades and its influence, use and influence increases by the day and that is not going to change with Brexit. Mr. Juncker seems to think that his beloved and decaying union is the centre of the world, but it is not.

He also seems to believe that the use of English is tied to Brussels’ whims, but it is not. English is the common language almost anywhere you go. I got to teach to classes with students from 6 different nationalities and languages and ENGLISH was the ONLY common means of communication. Whatever else I would speak would be a dead end to a part of the class. Not even Latin would make the trick.

And we can move from empirical evidence to statistical facts: of students in lower secondary school, outside Great Britain, learning a foreign language, 97% are studying English, 34% French and 23% German. Furthermore, 79% of primary school students are learning English; a meagre 4% study French. How much more clownish can you get?

Mr. Juncker frequently speaks nonsense and engages in strange and dubious behaviour. Being spiteful and resentful apparently have made him worse, but that will do nothing to advance whatever negotiations stands he may want to engage in. Being ridiculous tends to make you look neither credible, nor reliable. You will eventually be scorned and set aside. And you are really ridiculous Mr. Juncker.

All Unequal

ALL UNEQUAL

Many people who live in a world of make-believe and others who are just uninformed, plus many others who have vested interests in maintaining an illusion, have long subscribed to the idea that in the European Union all countries are equal. More than that, they are all best friends. Some even defended that nation-states were fading away and soon would be nothing but unpleasant memories.

Not that it is something that new or surprising. If one follows History, International Relations and Geopolitics, one will know that countries are NOT equal and they are frequently NOT friends and very seldom so for life.

Actually, the Portuguese may remember that in 2002 the EU opened an excessive deficit procedure against Portugal and when the fine looked inevitable, the process was dismissed, because….it turned out that France and Germany has incurred in the same violation and of course they could NOT be punished. No, Brussels would NEVER do that. NOT then, NOT now and NOT ever.

And the Danish may remember to have voted “NO” to the Maastricht Treaty and finding out that quite a few people, including foreign politicians and opinion makers were advocating Denmark’s exclusion from the European Community. However, when France (and The Netherlands) blocked the Constitutional Treaty in their referenda, no one pointed the exit to Paris and Amsterdam. No, they just froze the Treaty.

So, let us all shred the fanciful talk about equality and friendliness. The EU is about power and influence: those who have, use it; those who do not, suffer the consequences. They may have scrapped the tanks, the bombers and the cruisers, but when the major powers want to have their way, they can and they do inflict pain. Just ask the Greeks. Or ask the Portuguese, for that matter.

Três Troca-Tintas

TRÊS TROCA-TINTAS

O troca-tintismo é comum na vida política, Contudo, tal não deveria fazer-nos encarar a atitude como aceitável, normal, ou até benigna. Há evidentemente diferenças entre os troca-tintas ocasionais e os contumazes, os light e os sérios, mas não nos enganemos: uma coisa é mudar de opinião fruto do tempo, dos factos e da reflexão; outra, bem diferente, é dizer uma coisa e o seu contrário num curto espaço de tempo, num exercício de oportunismo e de falta de seriedade. Mário Soares, é um bom/mau exemplo de um troca-tintas português.

Esta semana assistimos a um soberbo número colectivo de troca-tintas. Não é o Trio Odemira, mas podemos chamar-lhes os Três Troca-Tintas, TTT para os amigos (que não devem ser muitos).

O Trio é composto por dois Portugueses (germanizados): Passos Coelho e Vítor Gaspar; e um Luxemburguês que gosta muito de Portugal e da Irlanda: Jean-Claude Juncker.

Pois estes Troca-Tintas entenderam unanimemente, após a reunião onde foi acertada mais uma renegociação da dívida grega, que Portugal e a Irlanda teriam direito a beneficiar das condições impostas à Grécia. Dois dias depois, os três deram o dito por não dito, viraram a casaca, trocaram as tintas e disseram exactamente o contrário do que haviam dito antes. Saliente-se a fantástica sintonia do Trio, dado que Coelho estava em Cabo Verde (de onde infelizmente já saiu), Juncker encontrava-se na Bélgica e Gaspar em Portugal.

As justificações para a pirueta é que divergiram e constituíram, digamos, os momentos em que os virtuosos fizeram os seus solos.

Gaspar, ao seu estilo, enredou-se nas palavras e nos conceitos, dizendo que “sobre esta questão tem havido considerável confusão no debate público em Portugal”. Presumivelmente gerada pleo próprio.

Juncker foi o mais criativo e nebuloso, dizendo que os jornalistas lhe colocaram questões num sítio escuro, onde não se ouvia (??) bem e que por isso não teria respondido bem. Enfim, uma declaração pueril, bizarra e até hilariante, se imaginarmos Juncker encurralado num canto escuro por ávidos jornalistas. Registe-se que vi o Senhor Juncker proferir as primeiras declarações, o local não parecia nada escuro, o senhor falava bem à vontade e com vontade.

Coelho, desta vez, foi mais honesto, até certo ponto. Basicamente, disse que o Senhor Wolfgang Schauble (Ministro das Finanças da Alemanha) disse que Portugal e a Irlanda não deviam solicitar algumas condições idênticas às da Grécia e como tal eu agradeço e obedeço. Ponto. Ah, e acrescentou rindo de forma apatetada, que tal tinha constituído um grande elogio porque separava as águas entre os Portugueses e os Irlandeses e a maralha grega.

CONCLUSÕES

1-   Juncker, Gaspar e Coelho disseram o que pensavam e queriam após a reunião do euro grupo.

2-   Schauble disse o que queria e pensava após as declarações daqueles.

3-   E aqueles afinaram o discurso pelo de Schauble após ouvirem a voz do meister.

4-   Juncker, Gaspar e Coelho são Três Troca-Tintas despudorados.

5-   Juncker, Gaspar e Coelho, especialmente os dois últimos, são também três servis sabujos a amando de Merkel e de Schauble.

6-   Pierre Moscovici, Ministro das Finanças da França, que fez eco do que disse Schauble, mostrou mais uma vez o que vale actualmente a França nos equilíbrios de poder na Europa.

Os Três Troca-Tintas: em 3 países diferentes, mas bem afinados na técnica de dizer uma coisa e o seu contrário  com a mesma cara de pau!
