THE END
Sooner or later, everyone experiences the pain of a terrible loss. Most
of them are irreversible losses and we forever carry the cross of missing and
the healing of remembering. But we endure the pain of knowing that there is no
future, not in this life. Just the memories of times past.
Then there are losses that can eventually be reversed. The suffering is
present all the same, mitigated by the hope we can get back who/what we lost, but
compounded by the anxiety caused by the risk of not being able to recover the
loss. The fear, the uncertainty eats away at you, leaving you in a permanent
state of restlessness.
And, sometimes, we can go through a succession of severe losses. It’s
like being clobbered with a sledgehammer, trying to get on your feet and getting
slammed again, and again, and again. Then we get numb, not sure of what aches
anymore, if it is D, or M, or U, or A, or X. It just lingers permanently and
strikes regularly and most of the times you do not even know what triggered it
and which one was triggered.
No, this is not the end, but each loss is a partial end, that in some
way brings us closer to the definitive end. Thus the choice of this Pearl Jam
song, to sublimate and (maybe) overcome the pain and the suffering of a loss,
and a loss and yet another loss….

P.S. For the record and not to cause any undue
alarm, I am not ill.
