A prisão de terroristas capturados em teatros de guerra ou conflito do Afeganistão à Península Arábica, passando pelo Iraque foi uma das políticas de George W. Bush mais duramente criticada e rejeitada por Barack Obama durante a campanha eleitoral e já na capacidade de Presidente dos Estados Unidos.
Em 2008, foi assim:

Leu bem. Barack Obama assinou uma executive order que mantém o essencial da política de George W. Bush relativamente a Guantanamo. É verdade, as prisões por tempo indeterminado, os julgamentos pelas comissões militares, a colocação dos prisioneiros essencialmente fora do circuito judicial federal, tudo se mantém. Até a posição da Administração Bush (muito criticada pelos Democratas) de que tais decisões se inserem na autoridade exclusiva do Presidente (“a discretionary executive act well within the authority … of the president”).
So much for all the liberal rethoric and sweet talk, so much for the Bush demonising, so much for the post-politics president, so much for change. Of course the Republicans must be laughing their heads off and the more liberal and leftish Democratic constituency must be going through the roof. Oh yes, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney must be sporting a wide smile. George W. – you’re vindicated on this one as well!
Por muito que se queira dourar a pílula, a luta contra o terrorismo do século XXI é mesmo uma “War on Terror”, que, em circunstâncias excepcionais pode requerer medidas excepcionais. Podes voltar George W. Bush, estás perdoado.
